The Kokomo Academy is a residential treatment facility for troubled
adolescents between the ages of 11 to 18. It is located in Kokomo
Indiana. The Academy accepts youth from each county in Indiana,
as well as from surrounding states. Kokomo Academy is a Title IV-E
eligible facility. The Kokomo Academy is also accredited by the
North Central Association.
The Academy strives to maximize the potential of each youth by
providing for their safety, education and emotional well being.
Our mission is accomplished when all steps have been taken to ensure
a successful and permanent transition home, and the youth becomes
a positive contributing member to his family and community. An integral
focus for each youth is behavior modification, which is channeled
through a Level Program. The Level Program is based on a token economy,
is positive in orientation and includes all facets of a students
behavior, from encouraging proper dress, to making good grades in
the classroom.
Education
The thrust of Kokomo Academy's education program is to provide
for each student a rich, diversified academic experience which meets
the needs of a student population encompassing a broad spectrum
of ability, life experience and academic history. Our primary goal
is preparing each student to re-enter society as a productive, educated
and responsible youth.
Those students with learning disabilities or emotional impairments
receive services through the Howard County Special Education Cooperative
to ensure each students Individual Education Plan (IEP) remains
current. Our older students, for whom re-entering public school
is not an option, are placed in the GED preparatory program after
receiving counseling as to the advantages and disadvantages of the
GED program. A traditional high school curriculum is offered for
students who will return to high school upon discharge. As a North
Central Association accredited institution, semester credit, transferable
to the students community school, is earned for successful course
completion.
Counseling Services
The focus on counseling opportunities includes individual, group
and family counseling efforts. All counselors are trained at least
to the level of a bacheloršs degree in psychology, or related field,
and are supervised by a masteršs level therapist with consultation
by a doctoral level psychologist. Kokomo Academy also provides after
care coordination which includes recommendations, appointments and
follow-ups with local school corporations and mental health providers.
Our goal is to ensure a smooth transition home with a community
support system in place.
Extra-Curricular Activities
There are a variety of extra-curricular opportunities for students
at Kokomo Academy. By design, these programs blend our education
and counseling components. Emphasis is on developing activities
and projects that enrich the students educational spectrum and teach
essential life skills. Activities range from intra-mural sports
to personal development projects. |
